Sensing Fall in High Park

Room three got ready for our trip to High Park to surround our senses with the signs of Autumn. The students were excited about heading out on the Streetcar and Subway.

We met our High Park Guides Emily and Robin. They talked about how we were going to use our senses to: look, listen, smell, touch and taste for.

Did you know sassafras leaves are irregular, some look like a ghost, some look like a mitten. The cool part is, if you scratch the stem of a sassafras leaf (that's a funny word isn't it?) it will smell like lemons or fruit loops!

Off we go walking through the forest. High Park has 3 distinct habitats: Forest, Savanah (the black oak savanah to be precise) and wetlands.

We stopped to listen for a Blue Jay's call, a Cardinals and Woodpecker.

Whoa! We found a bunch of fallen tree limbs and trunks. We saw holes that woodpeckers made to get to the bugs insid!

Yikes! Look at this mushroom. It felt really hard and weird. It kind of looks like an oyster. We definitely didn't use our sense of taste on this one.

Look at all these Autumn leaves! Did you know Oak trees leaves tend to be brown and orange when they turn. They rarely turn yellow or red.

We played a few games in between our hikes: Hawks and Squirrels (P here is making a nest out of found items before the Hawks get her) as well as Deer chase. That was a fun one.

It looks like we tuckered them out. We did a lot of hiking and walking today. Thankfully it wasn't raining and it was a beautiful Autumn day!

We will be back in the Winter to see how much the park has changed!
